Karate at Old Town Academy! As taught by Pacific Martial Arts
“We teach attitudes first.” That is a PMA motto that we have followed for years. Our mission is
excellence and dedication.
To whom will you trust your child’s growth and development in areas such as
            • Academic focus
            • Management of his or her self control when being confronted
            • Defensive skills
            • Athletic growth
            • Concentration, alertness, respect of others and community

The experienced staff of the Pacific Martial Arts has been teaching the valuable benefits of the
martial arts since 1978. Led by Grandmaster Jerry Devine, a former outstanding math teacher
and current director of the Martial Arts Museum of America, a member of the International Karate
Hall of Fame, a tenth degree black belt, as well as former president of the Amateur Athletic Union
karate southwest division. His own personal aim in karate is to give dignity and worth to each
person. He will be overseeing this new program personally.
Michael Brown, Sensei is the co-chair of mathematics at Mesa College and a fifth degree black
belt with four children in the PMA programs. Becky Black, Sensei, is a special education teacher
at Coronado High School. Both have 25 years or more experience in karate.
PMA has many other role models of excellence; our teachers are also leaders in the business,
medical, legal, educational and other professional fields.

Students need appropriate challenges
suitable for their ages and skill levels. Karate is an achievement-centered activity that allows a
child to pursue and explore their potentials. Karate is not a feel good therapy activity as is often
the case of the chain franchise schools. These schools care more about appearances and
numbers and are not about producing meaningful results.
The mental and spiritual growth of children is brought out in karate training. Students are
encouraged to adhere to excellence in personal conduct such as honesty, integrity, commitment,
sincerity and respect. The values of service to the community, respect for family, and
achievement at school are all encouraged in the classes. Very few of our students over the years
have ever gotten into a physical fight because we teach alertness and controlling situations. If
confronted they will have valuable skills to avoid severe situations.

The Old Town Academy karate program will be held at our main studio located just one block
down the street at 2266 San Diego Avenue. Tentatively students will be supervised in the walk
to the studio and back. Parents may also pick up children at the studio by arrangement. We also
plan to spend some days training on the campus, much of this depends on how the situation of
space develops as OTA begins the school year and formulates its needs. Our PMA studio is a
6,000 square foot facility. Students will have the opportunity to learn the same material, with the
same teachers, receive belt promotions, and train over the summers to maintain the continuity.

If you have any questions, please e-mail pma@pmakarate.com, or call 619.752.7515. Let us
know if you will be trying out the class so we can plan for that. We have the uniforms in stock.

Kids at camp!    Kids at the karate scholarship awards!

Please read these testimonials….. not all martial arts programs have the depth
nor commitment to the ideals of traditional karate such as done by the Pacific
Martial Arts. The PMA has 33 years of experience in San Diego at its two major
studios. It has also taught many campus programs.
Karate at PMA is not just fighting, kicking or
tournaments.

On line reviews….
Pacific Martial Arts is outstanding. Our son started
going there at 4 years old and has been there for 9
years. The staff is caring, talented, and courteous.
They have helped my son grow into a young man
who is kind, respectful, and confident in himself
and his relationships with others. PMA keeps the
teaching itinerary interesting and exciting. There
are numerous field trips and tournaments that the
kids can participate in and really look forward to.
The dojos are great and are well spaced around San Diego and the many class times are there to
accommodate all. I highly recommend.

June of 2009 and we are very satisfied. He is
always excited to go to class. They teach
respect and discipline and also keep it fun for
the students

The instructors are fantastic. They keep the kids engaged and happy and learning. For fun, exercise,
discipline, self-esteem, and life lessons, you're not going to find a better place.

This is the best karate Dojo that we have sent our son to. Not only is the instruction great, but the life lessons taught are insightful. There are "parent's night out" options on Saturdays and the tournaments are a blast! We highly recommend Pacific Martial Arts.

Over 15 years ago, our youngest son wanted to take karate. He (as well as the two parents) is still training with Pacific Martial Arts and our whole family ended up in the program. It was a great way for our children to experience self defense training, individual expression.
